Restoration

Centre of expertise for restoration – thanks to various restoration projects in years gone by, the Swiss Museum of Transport has gained an international reputation as a centre of expertise in the field of historic transport equipment restoration.

Example – the restoration of the «Gnom» locomotive completed in 2002. The «Gnom», dating from 1871, is the oldest surviving locomotive built by the mountain railway pioneer Riggenbach from Olten. Its restoration set the trend for future projects of this nature: most of the restoration work was carried out by steam enthusiasts from the Oensingen-Balsthalbahn railway with scientific assistance from the Swiss Museum of Transport’s restorer and curator. This was carried out in part in front of the visitors, enabling them to gain a better insight into historical technology and professional restoration techniques.

Beispiel - Ebenso Modellcharakter hat die Restaurierung der «Motosacoche Typ 417 Jubilé Sport 500 ccm», eines Schweizer Motorrades von 1931 aus der Sammlung des Verkehrshauses. Die «Motosacoche » wurde von einem Studententeam der Fachhochschule für Angewandte Kunst in La Chaux-de-Fonds, begleitet vom Restaurator des Verkehrshauses, in einen sowohl ausstellungsfähigen wie auch technikhistorisch korrekten Zustand restauriert. Ziel dieser Arbeit war in erster Linie ein Know-how-Transfer in der für die Schweiz noch jungen Studienrichtung der Konservierung und Restaurierung von technischem Kulturgut.
