The high-priestess of the Druids, Norma, has a secret liaison with Pollione, Roman proconsul in Gaul, by whom she has two sons. On learning that he only has eyes for the young Adalgisa, Norma is distraught: by way of revenge on Pollione, she plans her death and that of their children.

The Met Opera opens the season in fine form featuring two American divas in the leading roles of this gem of Italian bel canto. Sondra Radvanovsky and Joyce DiDonato are the adversaries in the roles of Norma and Adalgisa in this harrowing, dramatic opera by Bellini.
