New exhibition: medical help from the air

27.04.2018

In a new exhibition, the Swiss Museum of Transport and Swiss Air-Rescue Rega are presenting the history of medical air-rescue and the fascination with Rega. Today – the birthday of Rega which was founded on 27 April 1952 – Swiss Museum of Transport Director Martin Bütikofer and Rega CEO Ernst Kohler opened the new attraction in the Aviation Hall.

The 300-square-metre exhibition space offers thrilling insight into everyday life at Rega. Visitors can wave in a landing air-rescue helicopter in a downwash simulator in front of a video wall. One part of the exhibition is devoted to the Rega operation centre with information on air rescue in Switzerland and emergencies abroad. The Rega cinema shows a range of short films. Using the standard body positions in the shape of the letters Y (for "Yes") and N (for "No"), as used in an emergency for communication with the crew of the rescue helicopter, you can take part in a quiz and answer questions on Rega.

Giving something back to the Swiss public
Rega CEO Ernst Kohler is pleased to be able to present Rega to a large audience n the Swiss Museum of Transport: "In this exhibition we can give the Swiss public a better understanding of 'their' Rega – and that is something we just cannot do in everyday operations." Rega – a privately run, non-profit foundation – is supported and funded by more than 3.4 million patrons. But Ernst Kohler also sees the collaboration with the Swiss Museum of Transport from another perspective: "With this exhibition we can give something back to the Swiss public as a thank you for their support."

Continuing the tradition
"With this new exhibition the Swiss Museum of Transport is continuing a tradition based on a long-standing partnership," says the museum's Director Martin Bütikofer. "Rega is, and always will be, an important part of the museum." In 1980 Rega gave the Swiss 2/2 Museum of Transport its first rescue helicopter funded entirely by patrons' donations, the Alouette III (HB-XDF). To mark the fiftieth birthday of the museum, Rega presented it with an Agusta A109 K2 (HB-XWG) helicopter in 2009. Since then both have been on show in the Aviation Hall. The latter of the two helicopters is now showcased on an original landing platform with light and sound.
