How does a steam engine work?

Using a steam engine cut open lengthwise, we show you how the energy required for locomotion is generated from coal. The special feature of the locomotive shown here is the cogwheel, which was needed for negotiating the steep Brünig Pass line between Obwalden and the Bernese Oberland. Find out how the steam engine powers the cogwheel and adhesion wheels at the same time.
