Rhine ports – our gateway to the world
Exhibition opening on 24 June 2026
How do goods reach Switzerland? What processes are involved in shipping on the Rhine? And who ensures, day in, day out, that ports, ships and the movement of goods run smoothly? The new exhibition brings shipping on the Rhine to life and offers fascinating insights into a working and transport environment that is often little seen.
A river connects Switzerland with the world
The new attraction is located in the Shipping, Cable Cars and Tourism Hall. On the first floor, seagulls guide visitors through six interactive themed islands. They can experience how traffic control on the Rhine works, the challenges ship captains face in their daily work, and why water levels are crucial for shipping. A simulator invites visitors to navigate through locks themselves and learn about the specific requirements of navigation on the Rhine.
The focus is also on the people behind the operation of the ports. The exhibition provides insights into professions on board and on land, into logistical processes, and into the technical and organisational cooperation along the Rhine. Models, interactive stations and personal stories bring the microcosm of the Swiss Rhine ports to life and make it tangible.
