Thorvaldsen's lion and the consequences for tourism and art

Special exhibition from 14.10.2021 - 06.03.2022

The exhibition on the 200th anniversary of the Lion Monument shows the history of the monument as well as its impact on tourism in Lucerne and works of art that respond to the monument.

In 2021, Lucerne's Lion Monument will be 200 years old! Based on a design by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), it was created to commemorate the Swiss who died defending the empty palace during the storming of the Tuilleries. Hans Erni was also enthusiastic about Thorvaldsen's monument. To mark the anniversary, the Hans Erni Museum, in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Luzern and Löwendenkmal 21, is therefore staging an exhibition that presents the monument, its history and the process of its creation using exhibits from the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen as well as Swiss museums and private collections. On the other hand, the reception of the monument from both a touristic and an artistic point of view will be traced up to the 21st century with works by Anton Egloff, Hans Erni, Dieter Roth, Irma Stadelmann, Andreas Weber, Erwin Wurm and others.
