Sustainability

Sustainability is a key priority for the Swiss Museum of Transport. It takes environmental, social and economic factors into account when making decisions and is currently working on a comprehensive sustainability strategy to set out these objectives in concrete terms.

Flagship projects

House of Energy

The multi-purpose "House of Energy" building, which was commissioned in 2023, has a See-Energie central heating and cooling system. Since then, all buildings on the Verkehrshaus site have been heated and in some cases cooled with heat pumps. The old gas heating system now only serves as a reserve for peak loads and the temperature range. The roof and façade of the multi-purpose building are equipped with a photovoltaic system that supplies around 120,000 kWh per year – enough to cover the annual electricity requirements of around 30 households. This amount of energy covers part of the building’s own electricity requirements, and any surplus not used by the building is fed into the grid. The site’s total CO₂ footprint in 2025 was 287,767 kg.

Experience Energy

With the "Experience Energy!" exhibition, the Museum of Transport offers an interactive approach to the topic of energy and shows what a sustainable energy supply can look like.
