Only vehicles built before 1905 are eligible to participate. These historic automobiles, motorcycles and bicycles, the latter built up to 1914, are not only technical relics, but also living witnesses to a bygone era and make the hearts of classic car enthusiasts beat faster. A special challenge of the "Lucerne to Basel Veteran Run" is the crossing of the Unterer Hauenstein in the Jura. This route, with a maximum gradient of 6.3 percent and a length of 7.7 kilometers, overcoming 295 meters in altitude, is the most spectacular part of the event. Historic tractors are provided as a pulling aid for vehicles that are unable to tackle this challenging climb on their own.
Interaction between man, machine and animal
The route takes participants from Lucerne via Dagmersellen and Trimbach to Basel, with longer breaks planned in both towns to give man and machine a boost and carry out the necessary technical checks. In addition to the motorized presence, horse-drawn carriages, supervised by veterinarian and carriage collector Franz Knüsel, will enrich the field on selected sections. The crowning finale of the run is a festive reception at the Pantheon in Muttenz. There, spectators will have the opportunity to view the historic vehicles up close and celebrate the "heroes" of the ride. This eclectic mix of historic technology, sporting challenge and the interplay between man, machine and animal makes the "Lucerne to Basel Veteran Run" a unique event that honors the beginnings of mobility and at the same time builds a bridge to modern automobile admiration.
