Peter Wright’s 1985 production is a classic of the Royal Ballet repertoire and a thoroughly romantic ballet. With Adolphe Adam’s moving score and the atmospheric set designs by John Macfarlane, this story of love, betrayal, and redemption transports us into both the earthly and supernatural realms of Giselle.
The peasant girl Giselle has fallen in love with Albrecht. When she discovers that he is a nobleman betrothed to another, she takes her own life in despair. Her spirit is claimed by the Wilis—vengeful spirits of women determined to dance any man who crosses their path to death. Tormented by guilt, Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave, where he must face the Wilis—and Giselle’s spirit.
