100 years of planetariums

Modern planetariums like the one at the Swiss Museum of Transport are no longer just star theaters.

In 1923, the very first planetarium projector developed there was put into trial operation on the premises of the Zeiss company in Jena, Germany. Finally, in 1925, it was presented to the general public at the Deutsches Museum in Munich. The planetarium world will celebrate this anniversary between 2023 and 2025. But the development did not end there. Today, modern planetariums like the one at the Swiss Museum of Transport are no longer just star theaters, but also event and concert venues.

The "Sphere", the world's largest planetarium to date with a gigantic dome over 100 meters in diameter and 23,000 seats, opened in Las Vegas this autumn to coincide with its 100th anniversary. At the Verkehrshaus Planetarium, there are 246 seats in the 18-meter dome. Las Vegas describes the location as an event and concert hall with a unique atmosphere. The use of planetariums as event and concert venues is not a new development. Live concerts have been taking place under the dome of the Swiss Museum of Transport in this unique setting for many years, such as in January 2023, when KUNZ thrilled the audience with ten sold-out shows. These shows were conceptually and content-wise provided with suitable, self-produced visuals on the planetarium dome and are in no way inferior to the mega-events in Las Vegas. The well-known children's musician Andrew Bond is also a regular guest at the Lucerne Planetarium, as he will be again in January 2024 with his "Schternefeischter" program, again with coordinated and specially produced video and image content on the dome. The rest of the evening program at the Swiss Museum of Transport Planetarium also includes specially designed, impressive audiovisual shows such as "FLOW - Visions of Time", "Dimensions", "Space Rhythms Time Folds" and "Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon Planetarium Experience", which transport the audience to completely different worlds.

Marc Horat

"Planetariums have undergone an impressive technological development since their humble beginnings. Planetariums like the one at the Swiss Museum of Transport no longer have much in common with the installations of yesteryear, apart from the characteristic dome shape. They have evolved into immersive multimedia houses that offer a wide range of services and almost endless possibilities."
