In Part 1 of the series we already learned about the SETI project and the Arecibo message, but mankind also sent physical messages on space probes into the vastness of space.
Interstellar space probes have been traveling in space since the 1970s. Although their primary goal was to explore the solar system, they also carry the legacy of mankind into the universe and now move in the space between the stars, i.e. between stellar stars. An overview:
In 2012 and 2018, the Voyager probes (1 in 2012, 2 in 2018) left the sun's sphere of influence, the so-called heliosphere, and crossed the boundaries of our solar system at a distance of around 18 billion kilometers each time, i.e. around 120 times the distance between Earth and the sun. This was recognized because the measuring instruments registered a dramatic drop in solar particles and a rapid increase in interstellar radiation from our galaxy. Click here for a graphic representation of those measurements!
Whether these human messages - be it the Pioneer plaques, the Voyager records or the Arecibo message - will reach extraterrestrial beings at some point, whether they will understand our message and possibly even want to visit us or reply, is written in the stars!
