
Historical round trip: Switzerland at the end of the 19th century
To mark UNESCO's World Audiovisual Heritage Day on 27 October, the Documentation Centre is presenting albums and photographs by Giorgio Sommer. Discover his unique photographs and embark on a tour of Switzerland at the end of the 19th century.
Giorgio Sommer (1834-1914), a renowned photographer of the 19th century, was born in Frankfurt am Main and opened his own photo studio in Naples in 1857. Between 1880 and 1900, he travelled extensively through Switzerland and took numerous landscape photographs. These photographs offer valuable insights into the Swiss landscape, urban development and the transport and tourism infrastructure of the late 19th century.
