Rock paintings are mankind's oldest form of artistic expression. Tens of thousands of years ago, rock carvings and rock paintings represented a true quantum leap in intellectual capacity. In this illustrated lecture, the history of these spectacular representations of early human imagination will be shown using examples from Central Asia and Northern Europe to Arabia and the Sahara. The rock paintings not only provide information about the world views and myths of the time, but also about the respective economic and climatic conditions.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, such images have found their way into contemporary art. The inclusion of rock paintings in modern art confirms the relevance of this valuable cultural heritage.
