All about bikes and rails: The Circarama at Expo64

It was one of the main attractions at the Swiss National Exhibition Exop64 in Lausanne in 1964: the 360° Circarama "All about bikes and rails: The Circarama at Expo64". Now this restored, unique contemporary document can be seen in unprecedented quality in the Swiss Museum of Transport's planetarium, which is a direct descendant of the original Circarama with its modern 360-degree projection technology on a dome measuring over 500 square meters.

The show begins with a modern audiovisual exploration of the subject of transportation, produced by Rocco Helmchen and Johannes Kraas - a direct descendant of Circarama from 1964, so to speak. This 20-minute film, produced by Ernst A. Heiniger, shows Switzerland in the early 1960s in four acts as a country of railroads and technology, tradition and tourism. The electrification of transportation, the great Alpine crossings and the scenic beauty of the mountains, such as with images of Zermatt with the Matterhorn, are characteristic. For the shots, the cameras were mounted on trains, under a helicopter or on a car, for example.
